Highway 281 Wreck Leaves Teen Driver Seriously Injured

A 17-year-old Grand Island boy was seriously injured on Tuesday afternoon after his pickup truck collided with a semi-truck on Highway 281 in Hall County, Nebraska. The crash happened at 2:55 p.m. on October 6 at the intersection of Highway 281 and Wood River Road near Bosselman, according to the Hall County Sheriff’s Office.

According to the sheriff’s office, deputies said during the preliminary investigation that a 2020 Freightliner semi was traveling north on Highway 281 when the driver attempted to turn west onto Wood River Road. During the turn, the semi crossed the path of a southbound 2000 GMC Sierra pickup truck, and the two vehicles collided in the lanes of Highway 281.

The driver of the Freightliner was a 25-year-old man from Roseville, California, and he was not injured in the crash. The driver of the GMC Sierra was a 17-year-old minor from Grand Island who suffered serious injuries. He was transported to CHI Health St. Francis Medical Center for treatment.

An 18-year-old girl from Grand Island was also in the pickup and suffered minor injuries.

The good part of the accident was that the teenage driver was wearing a seat belt at the time of the collision, which helped reduce the impact of the crash. The minor passenger was not wearing a seat belt.

Authorities have ruled out alcohol as a factor and said they are confident that the driver was conscious at the time of the crash.

The Hall County Sheriff’s Office investigation team responded to the scene and began investigating the circumstances that resulted in the collision.
